DR, TV2, SBS strikes back!

Filed under: Events, new media — Bo Hyllested Drejer @ 09:58

Attended the Flowchannels of the future session, and the impression i got is that the old media conglomerats are pulling themselves together and reacting to the Web 2.0 trend - or probably as Henrik Føhns better puts it: The Social and Userdriven media trend.

A very clear indicator of this was that Palle Strøm from TV2 proclaimed that their strategy is to be the #1 website in Denmark within a year. Very interesting, since a pretty big part of my job is to help Media organisations to create compelling media services they can use to differentiate themselves with. So Palle, you are very welcome to call if find that you need help on the technical side! :-)
TV2 also announced that they would remove DRM for their Web TV site sputnik, making it available for everyone for free. Great! Add interactivity and it would be even greater!!!

Also Lars Grarup from DR told about the very extensive strategy for DR on New medias, which reaches from Web, podcasting, radio, News, Gaming, download of programs etc…I will really be following DR the next year, because they are definately back and seem to intend to be “all over the place”!!!

One of the big discussions at the session was wether the traditional flowchannels are dead. Neither DR, TV2, SBS thought this was the case and believed that there still is a need for flowhannels with big productions - which is partly supported by these observations from the Young Ones session where the youth representatives actually didn’t want to create content but only consume…interesting and just shows that there are many types of media consumers!

I agree with the point that flowchannels are still needed and the these organisations have capabilities that no other have in media productions, but i also believe that people really wan’t to be able to choose when they want to watch a particular program from the flowchannels. At least i do, and do from my Windows Media Center and 32″ LCD TV, which is my TV now. I rarely see TV live today and love it, but both TV2 and DR now enables everyone with a computer to do this. Thank You!

So to those who say that people do not want to watch TV on their computer i say. You are wrong. There are plenty solutions today where the PC is The TV. It might not look like a PC, but actually is…

Based in this sessions i think that we as media consumers are in for a treat from especially DR and TV2 the coming years. I look forward to entering the joyride”! :-)
